This is the original in the famous series of “Southern Men” Speight’s beer ads. Funny thing is, I knew the sweetheart in the man’s photo, she went to my church.
Anyway, enjoy the original ad that brought us “good on ya mate,” “reckon,” and “She’s a hard road findin’ the perfect woman, boy!” Classic.
Manliness is not about beer drinking, but it lubricates the loins of masculinity. It’s odd that the marketing ploy of the beer company went with such a definatively anti-Auckland and anti-urban parochial take on manhood, but it was so compelling, that even Auckland Jafas bought and drank Speights beer because they wanted to be “hard southern men” an icon of New Zealand masculinity. It obviously worked.
